New Delhi, Sep 1 (NationPress) In a subtle critique of the recent disruptions during the Monsoon Session, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju emphasized on Monday that the effective functioning of the Parliament and Assemblies is crucial for maintaining public trust in democracy.
Speaking at an event commemorating the 98th birth anniversary of the first Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, Charti Lal Goel, Rijiju remarked, "Discourse in the House is frequently driven by political motivations rather than genuine debate, which undermines the quality of discussions."
“In challenging times, the morals, integrity, and democratic principles exemplified by Charti Lal Goel serve as a beacon and should motivate contemporary leaders,” noted Rijiju.
He reflected on Goel's rise from modest beginnings, his ascent through discipline, neutrality, and dedication, and his role in establishing high standards for legislative operations since the Assembly's inception in 1993.
“Honoring such leaders is not merely a ceremonial act but a chance to reaffirm our commitment to public service, social welfare, and participatory governance,” he stated.
Rijiju also shared that he had visited the Delhi Legislative Assembly three times in recent months, which provided him the chance to engage with the institution’s rich heritage and honor the pioneers who molded its traditions and democratic values.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta paid her respects to Charti Lal Goel and stressed the necessity of reinstating the spirit of civility, mutual respect, and constructive dialogue that once defined legislative proceedings.
She urged opposition members to collaborate with the ruling members across party lines, stating, “We must conduct ourselves in a way that earns respect from our political adversaries, mirroring the example set by Charti Lal Goel.”
Speaker Vijender Gupta remarked, “Remembering the first Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly is not just a procedural obligation — it is a chance to reaffirm our commitment to public service, social welfare, and participatory governance.”
The event also featured Union Minister of State for Corporate Affairs Harsh Malhotra, Vice-Chairperson of Gandhi Smriti and former Union Minister Vijay Goel, Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht, Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh, former governor Jagdish Mukhi, and other Members of the Legislative Assembly.
A special commemorative booklet on Charti Lal Goel, detailing his inspiring life journey, was also unveiled.
Vijay Goel reflected on his father’s life and principles, emphasizing his journey from humble origins in a village lacking electricity or water to becoming the first Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly.
