Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 15 (NationPress) As the local body elections approach, a new controversy has ignited following Thiruvananthapuram Mayor Arya Rajendran's recent 'World Book of Records' award received in London. While CPI(M) leaders and Rajendran's party supporters celebrated this recognition with a flurry of congratulatory messages, opposition members mocked the event, labeling it a “purchased honour.”
The award, conferred by the World Book of Records, a body established by an Indian in the UK, acknowledged the Corporation’s sustainable development efforts.
On Facebook, Mayor Rajendran stated: “I am proudly receiving the Certificate of Excellence at the World Book of Records ceremony in the UK Parliament for the sustainable development initiatives carried out in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. I dedicate this award to the movement and the people.”
Images of the Mayor holding the certificate quickly circulated on social media, accompanied by commendations from CPI(M) leaders and party advocates.
However, detractors claimed that the event was staged in a rented hall and had no official ties to the British House of Commons, notwithstanding the prominent display of the Parliament’s name on posters.
Critics further derided the award as one that was “acquired through financial means.”
The Local Self-Government Department had previously sanctioned the Mayor’s visit, based on an invitation dated August 22 from the World Book of Records.
The order clarified that the recognition pertained to the Corporation’s extensive “Seed Ball” campaign, which engaged more than 6,000 children at Putharikandam Maidan.
According to government guidelines, the Mayor's travel expenses were to be covered by the Corporation's funds, with air travel approved following a recommendation from the Corporation Secretary.
As congratulations and satirical remarks continue to clash online, this episode has sparked discussions about the legitimacy of lesser-known international awards and the appropriateness of utilizing public funds for international trips in pursuit of such recognitions.
Over the past five years, since she made history as the youngest Mayor in 2020, she has faced scrutiny regarding her performance in office.
With local body elections approaching, the BJP, currently the opposition in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, is aiming for a power comeback.
