Russia's Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, on Tuesday, 1 September called on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President Nitin Nabin at the BJP Headquarters in New Delhi, with discussions centred on deepening the long-standing partnership between India and Russia. The meeting comes days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek.

Key Discussions at the Meeting

According to a statement issued by Vijay Chauthaiwale, In-charge of the BJP's Foreign Affairs Department, Nabin underscored the strong personal rapport between Prime Minister Modi and President Putin, noting that their regular high-level engagements have provided sustained momentum to bilateral ties. Nabin also acknowledged Ambassador Alipov's long association with India and his role in nurturing the relationship between the two nations.

The Modi–Putin meeting in Bishkek on the sidelines of the SCO Summit was also reviewed during the interaction, with both sides expressing confidence in the trajectory of the partnership.

People-to-People Ties and Skilled Professionals

Both sides emphasised people-to-people connections as a foundational pillar of the India–Russia relationship. Ambassador Alipov highlighted the growing potential for skilled Indian professionals to contribute in Russia — a signal of expanding labour and talent mobility between the two countries. Nabin expressed optimism about further high-level engagements, including in the context of the upcoming BRICS Summit to be held in India.

BJP's Organisational Strength in Focus

Nabin briefed the Russian envoy on the BJP's organisational structure, including its grassroots network of members and karyakartas, its morchas and departments, the recently constituted national team, and the party's emphasis on sustained engagement beyond electoral cycles.

Ambassador Alipov congratulated Nabin and the BJP on recent electoral victories in Assam and West Bengal, and praised the party's deep grassroots presence. He also commended Prime Minister Modi's 'Mann Ki Baat' as a unique initiative for maintaining direct and regular connect with citizens across India.

Looking Ahead: 80 Years of Diplomatic Relations in 2027

A significant marker on the horizon is 2027, when India and Russia will mark 80 years of diplomatic relations. Both sides expressed confidence that this milestone would open further avenues for deepening bilateral cooperation — particularly through stronger cultural, academic, and people-to-people linkages. This meeting adds to a pattern of sustained diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Moscow even as global geopolitical alignments remain in flux.
