Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 4 (NationPress) The uproar surrounding the purported discrepancies in the gold plating of the Sabarimala temple sanctum has escalated into a significant political debate, with the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) asserting that no lapses occurred, while the Pandalam Palace has called for a thorough investigation.
TDB president P. S. Prasanth stated on Saturday that there was no fault on the part of the Board regarding the gold plating procedures.
He clarified that the panels sent to Chennai for restoration were not entrusted to Unnikrishnan Potty, contrary to allegations, and that the 'Thiruvabharanam' was transported under police protection in the presence of the Commissioner.
"The order from 2019 specified copper panels, and the warranty agreement with Smart Creations was in Unnikrishnan Potty's name, which is why he was involved. We will pursue a comprehensive inquiry, but the accusations being made are politically driven," Prasanth remarked.
In response to these allegations, Unnikrishnan Potty asserted that the panels given to him were indeed copper, as noted in the Devaswom's own documentation.
He expressed ignorance about any prior gold plating and assured that he had not showcased the panels or taken them elsewhere.
"If any wrongdoing is established, I welcome action. I am prepared to assist the inquiry officials," he stated.
Officials from Devaswom Vigilance indicated that Potty, who has already faced questioning in Thiruvananthapuram and Bengaluru, may be summoned again if necessary.
Meanwhile, the government led by Pinarayi Vijayan is reportedly contemplating transferring the investigation to the Crime Branch amidst ongoing evidence collection.
The Pandalam Palace emphasized that the government must act with responsibility and address public apprehensions.
It raised concerns regarding the gold plating work conducted in Chennai and questioned the rapid deterioration of the coating.
The Palace also urged officials to investigate whether the gold sheets donated by liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya were unaccounted for and highlighted that critical procedural norms established in 2019 were not adhered to.
Traditionally, Lord Ayyappa, the chief deity of Sabarimala, was raised as a child by the former King of Pandalam, rendering the royal family as the earthly custodians of the deity, with their customs playing a vital role in temple rituals.
