Shiromani Akali Dal Condemns Lok Sabha Seat Delimitation Under Women's Reservation Bill
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chandigarh, April 15 (NationPress) The President of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Sukhbir Badal, has voiced strong opposition against the proposal for delimiting Lok Sabha seats under the pretext of the Women’s Reservation Bill. He described this population-driven delimitation initiative as "grossly unfair to Punjab".
Badal emphasized that his party supports a united approach from all political factions to contest the delimitation effort.
He elaborated on the inequitable aspects of this delimitation plan, stating: "Punjab, which is primarily a minority state, will suffer the most from this population-based delimitation. While Punjab sees only a minimal increase in seats, Haryana is projected to experience nearly a hundred percent surge, effectively doubling its Lok Sabha representation."
"What does this mean for us? We are already subjected to systemic discrimination and injustice," he added.
The SAD President remarked that this delimitation approach penalizes Punjab for adhering to the national population control agenda while favoring states that ignore such goals.
In his emphatic statement, Badal characterized the move as a severe blow to the already fragile federal framework in India, asserting, "This strategy is a deliberate attempt to concentrate power in just four Hindi-speaking states—Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Rajasthan—almost doubling their Lok Sabha representation and granting them a collective dominance of over 40 percent. This situation would marginalize all other states."
However, Badal reaffirmed his party's unwavering support for the proposed Women’s Reservation Bill, aligning it with the values and teachings of the revered Guru Sahiban.
"SAD stands firmly for women's reservation. But we cannot accept the use of this noble cause as a cover for perilous delimitation tactics," he stressed.
Regarding the party’s strategy to address this "new challenge to our federal structure," Badal stated: "In the spirit of genuine federal unity and the integrity of the nation, SAD will lead a collaborative effort with all parties in Punjab to resist this attack on both Punjab and the federal framework of India."
He urged all political entities and advocates for Punjab to rally behind SAD in opposing this infringement on democratic and federal rights, thereby reinforcing the movement for a truly federal structure in the country.
