Washington, July 30 (NationPress) The Indian Consulate General in San Francisco has issued a safety warning for Indian nationals residing in California, the other states along the US West Coast, and Hawaii following a strong 8.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula early Wednesday morning.

According to the consulate's post on X, "The Consulate General of India in San Francisco is actively monitoring the potential tsunami threat resulting from the recent 8.7 magnitude earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. Indian nationals in California, as well as those in other US West Coast states and Hawaii, are urged to heed the following precautions."

Indian nationals are advised to stay updated on local alerts by closely following communications from US authorities, including local emergency management and the US Tsunami Warning Centers. They should consider relocating to higher ground if a tsunami alert is issued, avoid coastal zones, prepare for emergency situations, and ensure that their devices are charged.

US President Donald Trump has confirmed the tsunami alert via his social media platform, Truth Social, advising residents to prioritize their safety.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake took place at approximately 23:24 GMT on Tuesday, with its epicenter located about 125 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a prominent city in the far eastern region of Russia.

Initially assessed as an 8.0 magnitude earthquake, the USGS later revised its classification to 8.7 based on updated information.

The earthquake occurred at a relatively shallow depth of 19.3 kilometers (12 miles), raising the likelihood of severe surface shaking and possible tsunami waves.

This powerful tremor prompted a tsunami alert across parts of the Pacific Ocean, with the USGS cautioning that destructive tsunami waves could impact coastal regions of Russia and Japan within three hours following the earthquake.
