Jammu, March 4 (NationPress) The president of Jammu & Kashmir Peoples’ Conference (JKPC) and MLA Sajad Gani Lone walked out of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Tuesday following the Speaker's disallowance of his motion seeking amendments related to Article 370, police verification, and the alleged rigging during the 1987 elections.
As the question hour concluded, Sajad Gani Lone rose from his seat to challenge Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather on his authority to reject his proposed amendments concerning Article 370, an investigation into the supposed rigging of the 1987 elections, and the detentions enacted under the Public Safety Act (PSA).
Speaker Rather explained that the motion was disallowed according to the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the House.
Out of the seven amendments submitted by Sajad addressing the Lt. Governor’s address, only two were permitted.
In his proposed amendments, Sajad pointed out that the Lt. Governor’s address failed to mention Article 370, proposed changes to the existing police verification system, and a probe into the alleged rigging of the 1987 elections.
He emphasized that the resolution for the restoration of Article 370 passed in the previous J&K Assembly session was not acknowledged.
“We are victims of police verification, and the rules are excessively strict. I have faced it myself. No one should suffer due to the actions of their relatives. We cannot remain silent on these matters,” he stated.
Congress MLA Nizamuddin Bhat backed Sajad’s claim, asserting that police verification deserved discussion and debate within the Assembly.
“The repeal of the PSA should have been included in the Lt. Governor’s address if there was genuine intent,” Sajad remarked. The Speaker clarified that such issues fall under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and that the PSA cannot be annulled by the Assembly until statehood is reinstated.
It is noteworthy that Sunil Kumar Sharma, the BJP MLA and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, declared that the BJP would prevent any unconstitutional, undemocratic, or anti-national activities from occurring in the J&K Assembly during its current budget session.
