New Delhi, March 12 (NationPress) In a precautionary measure to ensure harmonious celebrations of both Holi and Ramzan, the administration in UP's Sambhal has covered the mosques with tarpaulin sheets prior to the festivals, eliciting diverse reactions from political figures, with members of both the BJP and Samajwadi Party voicing their support for the initiative.
In an interview with IANS, BJP's Bihar MLA Haribhushan Thakur justified the action, stating: "It’s essential because Muslims view color as inauspicious. This initiative helps avert any possible disputes or conflicts. I appreciate the Uttar Pradesh government for taking this initiative to prevent communal discord."
Samajwadi Party MP Zia Ur Rehman Barq also recognized the action but expressed some concerns. "It’s commendable that the administration is taking precautions, but I challenge the necessity of covering the mosques. The police should manage law and order. While I don’t intend to politicize this, if these coverings are essential, it’s for the better. We all wish for both Jumma Namaz and Holi festivities to proceed peacefully."
The increased security measures are in response to last year’s violent protests regarding a court-ordered survey of the Jama Masjid in Sambhal, which some believe is located on the site of a demolished Vishnu temple. This incident resulted in clashes and fatalities, prompting local authorities to take no chances with the forthcoming festivals.
Holi festivities in Sambhal commenced with the Rangbhari Ekadashi celebrations, which traditionally span five days leading up to the main event on Friday. The augmented security reflects the sensitivity surrounding the situation, especially following the mosque-temple controversy.
Holi is celebrated as the festival of colors and joy and is among the most anticipated events in India. On this day, people partake in gulaal application, throw colored water, and enjoy gujiyas and other treats. It is a time for camaraderie, and individuals cherish spending the day with family and friends. The excitement is palpable, with many gathering colors, gulaal, water guns, balloons, and gujiyas weeks ahead of the festivities.
