Meghalaya's Former Chief Minister Takes Action Against Ex-MLA Over Controversial Speech
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Shillong, March 10 (NationPress) Former Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Mukul Sangma, has officially filed a police report against ex-legislator S.G. Esmatur Mominin, alleging that he delivered a speech capable of inciting communal unrest ahead of the forthcoming elections for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
In a written statement submitted to the Officer-in-Charge of Phulbari Police Station on Tuesday, Sangma cited a viral video circulating on various social media platforms.
The clip reportedly depicts Mominin addressing a crowd on the evening of March 9, shortly after an alleged physical altercation earlier that same day.
Sangma claims that this incident took place at the Deputy Commissioner's office in Tura, where Mominin had gone to file his nomination papers for the upcoming GHADC elections.
In his complaint, Sangma criticized the speech for containing inflammatory and “vitriolic election rhetoric,” especially given the region's already heightened political and social sensitivities.
The tensions are particularly associated with the involvement of non-tribal candidates in the district council elections in the Garo Hills.
Sangma cautioned that such remarks, made in an already charged political atmosphere, could exacerbate divisions and incite hostility among communities.
Moreover, he alleged that during the speech, Mominin mentioned his name alongside those of two other public figures, implying their tacit support for his candidacy and the involvement of non-tribal candidates in the elections.
Sangma firmly rejected these claims, stating that he had never had any discussions with Mominin nor provided any form of endorsement.
He characterized the allegations as “entirely false” and warned that the spread of such rumors might escalate communal tensions.
While the exact number of attendees could not be independently verified, Sangma observed that the voices in the video indicated the presence of more than ten individuals.
He has requested the police to initiate a case against Mominin under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Sections 192, 196, 353, and 57, or any other applicable provisions.
