Did Assam CM Sarma Justify His Criticism of Bengal CM Banerjee's Actions During ED Raid?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Jan 9 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma did not hold back on Friday, lambasting Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, along with the Trinamool Congress leader for her behavior before and following the recent Enforcement Directorate (ED) raid at the I-PAC office in Kolkata. This incident comes as a legal showdown between the Trinamool Congress and the Centre is anticipated on January 14.
In response to these events, CM Sarma expressed that Banerjee's conduct during the ED operation raised alarming questions regarding her adherence to propriety and constitutional norms.
“Her actions at the crime scene, the way she handled official documents, and her derogatory remarks towards the Union Home Minister are profoundly troubling,” remarked the Assam CM.
Sarma went on to highlight that such behavior from a sitting Chief Minister could significantly damage public trust in democratic institutions.
“This type of conduct risks diminishing public esteem for her position. It is regrettable if a Chief Minister resorts to seizing documents and allegedly preventing individuals from leaving. This exceeds what is acceptable in a constitutional democracy,” he added.
The controversy arose following ED operations at I-PAC’s Kolkata office in relation to a continuing investigation, after which CM Banerjee made a personal appearance at the location.
She has accused the central agency of acting under the influence of the Union government, claiming that the raids are politically motivated.
The Trinamool has since associated the ED’s actions with what they describe as a systematic misuse of central agencies to target Opposition leaders and parties.
On Thursday, CM Banerjee’s party approached the courts to contest the legality of the raid and the methods of the central agencies.
A court battle between the Trinamool-led West Bengal government and the Centre is on the horizon.
In the meantime, the ED insists that its actions are fully compliant with the law and based on solid evidence, asserting that investigations are conducted independently and free from political influence.
The central investigative agency has also petitioned the Calcutta High Court for a First Information Report against CM Mamata Banerjee.
However, on Friday, the High Court declined the ED's request for an urgent hearing regarding the matter.
The ED had approached the bench led by acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul seeking immediate attention after a previous hearing could not proceed at the single-judge bench of Justice Suvra Ghosh due to an overcrowded courtroom.
With Justice Ghosh exiting the courtroom, the next hearing is set for January 14.
