The Kerala Legislative Assembly witnessed its first major political confrontation of the new session on Tuesday, 2 June, as a debate over spiralling prices of essential commodities rapidly escalated into a direct clash between Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan of the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) and Leader of Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan, culminating in a walkout by the Left Democratic Front (LDF).

The Adjournment Motion That Lit the Fuse

The confrontation was triggered shortly after the election of Deputy Speaker Shanimol Osman, when the Opposition moved an adjournment motion on rising fuel-driven inflation. Former Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal, moving the motion, pointedly reminded Satheesan of his own repeated demands — made from the Opposition benches — that the then-Left government cut taxes on petrol and diesel during periods of high fuel prices.

'We would like to know whether the Chief Minister is prepared to practise what he preached from the Opposition benches and provide relief to the people,' Balagopal said.

Satheesan Turns the Spotlight on the Left's Financial Legacy

Responding to the motion, Satheesan shifted the debate to the financial condition inherited from a decade of Left rule, arguing that severe fiscal strain was limiting the government's room for large-scale relief. He referenced a White Paper being prepared by his government on Kerala's finances, declining to reveal its contents but warning it would expose what had transpired over the previous ten years.

'I am not in a position to disclose its contents now. But it will reveal what happened during the last decade,' Satheesan said. He further alleged that the previous administration had left behind liabilities including approximately ₹2,800 crore in dues to the State Civil Supplies Corporation, hampering the state's ability to intervene effectively in the market. Kerala, he noted, is a consumer state facing significant inflationary pressures that demand active market intervention.

Vijayan Accuses Government of Evasion, Announces Walkout

The remarks drew a sharp riposte from Vijayan, who accused the UDF government of sidestepping the Opposition's core concerns. 'Instead of addressing the concerns raised by the Opposition, the Chief Minister has chosen to divert attention. Even when international oil prices fell, consumers were not given adequate relief. The burden is now being passed on to ordinary people,' Vijayan said.

The veteran Communist Party of India (Marxist) — CPI(M) leader also trained his fire on the Centre's petroleum pricing policies, which he held responsible for driving inflation across the state. He then announced that the Left would walk out in protest against the government's refusal to permit a detailed discussion on the issue.

Speaker Intervention After BJP Row

The proceedings briefly descended into disorder when Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan allowed BJP legislator Gopakumar to speak. Left members objected, citing convention that representatives of allied parties within the Left opposition front should be given precedence. The Speaker intervened and restored order following the protest.

What This Signals for the New Session

The stormy exchange offered the first indication of what is likely to be an aggressive Opposition strategy throughout the new Assembly session. Equally, it signalled that the UDF government intends to place the financial record of the previous Left administration under sustained scrutiny in the weeks ahead. With the White Paper on Kerala's finances yet to be tabled, the fiscal blame game is far from over.
