New Delhi, March 20 (NationPress) The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, has put forward a suggestion to extend the tenure of three additional judges of the Chhattisgarh High Court for another year.

During its meeting on March 19, 2025, the Supreme Court Collegium resolved to propose that Justices (i) Sachin Singh Rajput, (ii) Radhakishan Agrawal, and (iii) Sanjay Kumar Jaiswal be reappointed as Additional Judges of the High Court of Chhattisgarh for a fresh one-year term,” according to a statement posted on the official website of the apex court on Thursday.

In a separate announcement, the SC Collegium has also sanctioned the appointment of Justices Sumeet Goel, Sudeepti Sharma, and Kirti Singh as permanent judges in the Punjab & Haryana High Court.

According to Article 217 of the Constitution, the Chief Justice and judges of the High Courts are appointed by the President. Furthermore, under Article 224 of the Constitution, the President can appoint Additional Judges.

When recommending the appointment of an additional judge to become a permanent judge, the Chief Justice must provide statistics detailing the monthly disposal of cases, judgments delivered by the judge in question, as well as the number of cases cited in the Law Journal, all duly certified.

Additionally, information regarding the total number of working days, actual court attendance, and days absent during the period for which the disposal statistics are submitted must also be presented.

As per the Memorandum of Procedure (MoP) governing the appointment of High Court judges, the Chief Justice of the High Court should refrain from recommending the appointment of an Additional Judge when a vacancy for a permanent judge exists.
