New Delhi, March 23 (NationPress) The Supreme Court has released a video on Saturday, originally provided by the city’s Commissioner of Police to the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court (HC), revealing burnt cash piles allegedly found at the residence of Justice Yashwant Varma.
Additionally, the press release from the apex court included the report presented by the Chief Justice of the Delhi HC, a response from Justice Varma, and other related documents.
In his written defense to the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, Justice Varma, who is embroiled in allegations of unaccounted cash discovered at his residence last week, asserted that the footage of the burnt cash appears to be a “conspiracy to frame and malign” him.
According to the judge, this incident reinforces his “strong belief that the entire situation is part of a series of events that occurred recently, including the baseless allegations that circulated on social media in December 2024.”
“I categorically state that neither I nor any family members have ever stored or kept cash or currency in that storeroom at any time. Our cash withdrawals, conducted periodically, are fully documented and always processed through regular banking methods, including UPI applications and cards. Regarding the claims of cash recovery, I reiterate that no one from my household has reported seeing any currency in burnt form in that room,” stated Justice Varma.
“Assuming, without conceding, that the video was recorded immediately at the incident site, none of it seems to have been recovered or seized. Furthermore, I must emphasize that none of the staff reported seeing remnants of cash or currency that might have been present on-site,” he continued.
On Friday, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna established a three-member committee to investigate Justice Varma.
“The Chief Justice of India has appointed a three-member committee comprising Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana; Justice G.S. Sandhawalia, Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh; and Anu Sivaraman, Judge of the High Court of Karnataka, to conduct an inquiry into the allegations against Justice Yashwant Varma, a current Judge of the High Court of Delhi,” stated a press release from the Supreme Court.
It further mentioned that the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court has been instructed to refrain from assigning any judicial duties to Justice Yashwant Varma for the time being.
