New Delhi, Oct 10 (NationPress) The Supreme Court is set to deliberate on a petition from C. Joseph Vijay's political faction, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), advocating for an independent investigation led by a former Apex Court judge into the recent Karur stampede in Tamil Nadu, which tragically claimed the lives of 41 individuals and injured many others.
According to the causelist available on the Apex Court's official site, a Bench comprising Justices J. K. Maheshwari and N. V. Anjaria will take up the case on October 10.
Additionally, the Apex Court will review a separate special leave petition (SLP) from BJP leader Uma Anandan, who is contesting the Madras High Court's decision to deny the transfer of the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
In its previous ruling, the Madras High Court had declined to pursue a CBI probe and instead established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by IPS officer Asra Garg to investigate the unfortunate event.
On September 3, the Madras High Court criticized TVK's political leaders for neglecting their constituents following the devastating incident.
“It is alarming that the event organizers, including the party leader, fled the scene, leaving their own supporters behind. There was no sign of remorse or accountability,” remarked Justice N. Senthilkumar in a single-judge ruling.
The Madras High Court strongly condemned Mr. Vijay, the event organizers, and party members for vacating the premises immediately after the tragedy.
“A responsible political party should have acted swiftly to assist those caught in the stampede, where numerous children, women, and young individuals tragically lost their lives,” the court emphasized.
The Madras High Court instructed the SIT to carry out a fair and timely investigation, with regular updates to be provided.
