Mumbai, Oct 13 (NationPress) The Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC) has formally requested that the Election Commission of India (ECI) postpone the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in the state, citing the ongoing elections for local and civic bodies.
The SEC, in its recent correspondence, indicated that it is currently focused on finalizing the electoral process across 29 Municipal Corporations, 247 Municipal Councils, 42 Nagar Panchayats out of 147 Nagar Panchayats, 32 Zilla Parishads out of 34 Zilla Parishads, and 336 Panchayat Samitis out of 351 Panchayat Samitis before the Supreme Court's deadline of January 31 next year.
According to SEC sources, the commission has urged the ECI to delay the SIR until these elections are completed, as the electoral machinery is heavily engaged in preparations and the actual execution of these polls.
“The Honorable Supreme Court of India has instructed on May 6, 2025, that the State Election Commission strive to complete elections for local bodies in Maharashtra within four months, allowing the commission the option to request extensions in specific cases. Upcoming elections include all 29 Municipal Corporations, 247 Municipal Councils, 42 Nagar Panchayats out of 147, 32 Zilla Parishads out of 34, and 336 Panchayat Samitis out of 351,” stated the SEC in its letter.
The SEC has confirmed that the delimitation process for wards in the Zilla Parishads and Panchayat Samitis is complete, while delimitation for Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils, and Nagar Panchayats is nearing completion.
The next step will involve dividing the Legislative Assembly electoral rolls for these local bodies, followed by the actual elections.
“The election process for all these bodies is tentatively expected to extend until January 2026, during which time most Deputy Collectors and Tahsildars (serving as Returning Officers and Assistant Returning Officers for local elections) will be occupied,” the SEC noted.
“Given that the same personnel, including Deputy Collectors and Tahsildars, are responsible for local body elections and the revision of assembly electoral rolls, we request that any planned SIR be postponed until at least the end of January 2026,” the SEC emphasized.
This request coincides with the intensified preparations of the MahaYuti and Maha Vikas Aghadi for the impending local and civic body elections.
Both ruling and opposition parties are ramping up their outreach to voters, exploring various strategies, including going solo based on their strengths or forming alliances, delegating decisions to their local units.
Notably, an all-party delegation is scheduled to meet the state Chief Electoral Officer on Tuesday, urging for fair and transparent elections, particularly amidst allegations of vote rigging during the previous state assembly elections.
