The police in Chengalpattu district have stated that these restrictions are necessary as part of the security measures for the Prime Minister's involvement in the National Democratic Alliance’s election campaign rally in Madurantakam on January 23.
As per the police advisory, heavy vehicles will be prohibited from accessing GST Road between Chennai and Tindivanam from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday.
The rally, taking place along the Chennai-Tindivanam section of the highway, is the NDA's first significant public event ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections and is anticipated to attract a large turnout and volunteers from all over the State.
The Prime Minister will address attendees at the rally and present a special election address. Leaders from NDA parties, such as the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Bharatiya Janata Party, Pattali Makkal Katchi, Tamil Maanila Congress, and the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, are expected to be present.
Motorists using heavy vehicles traveling from Chennai to Tindivanam have been advised to take a diversion via Vandalur-Kelambakkam-Mamallapuram and the East Coast Road (ECR), rejoining the GST Road at Marakkanam. Alternative inland routes via Vandalur, Padappai, Oragadam, Walajabad, Kancheepuram, Vandavasi, Tiruvannamalai, and Villupuram have also been announced.
Vehicles coming from Tiruchi and Salem towards Chennai should utilize diversion routes through Ulundurpet, Tiruvannamalai, Vandavasi, and Kancheepuram.
Government buses and light motor vehicles will experience diversions between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday. Traffic from Chennai towards Tindivanam and Villupuram will be directed either through ECR-based roads or inland routes via Kancheepuram and Vandavasi.
Vehicles traveling to Chennai from Villupuram and Tindivanam have been instructed to use Marakkanam-ECR or designated bypass routes.
The police have urged drivers to plan their journeys, adhere to traffic signage, and cooperate with officers on duty to facilitate smooth traffic flow during the Prime Minister's visit and the high-profile public gathering.
