New Delhi, April 10 (NationPress) Security measures have been significantly strengthened at the National Investigation Agency (NIA) headquarters and Patiala House Court in the capital city as preparations are made for the arrival of Tahawwur Rana, the primary accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
Rana, a 64-year-old Canadian citizen originally from Pakistan and a close associate of David Coleman Headley (also known as Daood Gilani), is being extradited from the United States to stand trial in India for his alleged involvement in the 2008 Mumbai attacks that resulted in the deaths of 166 individuals and left many others injured.
According to sources, the extradition is being closely monitored by National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval, along with senior officials from the NIA and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
A stringent security perimeter has been established, with personnel from paramilitary forces and Delhi Police positioned at critical points, including the NIA headquarters located in South Delhi.
Furthermore, high-ranking police officials are actively overseeing the security measures on-site.
As a precautionary step, Gate No. 2 of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Metro Station, situated near the NIA headquarters, was closed to the public. This entrance had been accessible since morning but was shut down due to increased security concerns.
Officials have confirmed that a special chartered flight transporting Rana took off from the USA on April 9. Once he arrives in Delhi, Rana will be taken into custody by the NIA, which is coordinating his extradition with the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW).
Rana is reported to have established connections with Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba, facing multiple grave charges under Indian law. These charges include criminal conspiracy, waging war against the Government of India, murder, forgery, and violations of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Upon his arrival, it is expected that Rana will be held in a high-security ward at Delhi's Tihar Jail and will appear before a Delhi court shortly thereafter. However, officials from Mumbai Police have indicated that they have yet to receive official confirmation regarding Rana's transfer to the city.
