Guwahati, Dec 16 (NationPress) All seven individuals implicated in the notorious murder case of renowned Assamese figure Zubeen Garg appeared before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) of Kamrup Metropolitan via video link on Tuesday. This marked a significant milestone in the ongoing legal proceedings following the submission of the Special Investigation Team’s (SIT) chargesheet.
During the session, the extensive chargesheet was formally presented to all accused, who are currently in judicial custody. The court has scheduled the next hearing for December 22, at which time the CJM is expected to transfer the case to the sessions court.
Once the case is handed over, the trial for this sensational matter is anticipated to commence formally. Previously, the court approved the virtual presentation of the accused, responding to the Assam Government's request due to security and logistical concerns. Subsequently, the CJM mandated that all seven suspects be brought before the court through video conferencing, a decision aimed at facilitating the proceedings while ensuring safety.
On Tuesday, the accused were represented by attorney Dhrubajyoti Das, appointed by the District Legal Services Authority to provide legal representation during the hearing.
This development unfolds as the SIT has recently submitted a detailed chargesheet exceeding 3,500 pages regarding the murder of Zubeen Garg, a case that has stirred considerable public interest and emotional reactions throughout Assam.
The SIT, established to investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding the singer’s demise, conducted an exhaustive inquiry over several months. Officials report that the SIT questioned over 300 witnesses, gathered forensic and digital evidence, and held multiple interrogations before finalizing the chargesheet.
The SIT chargesheet identifies several individuals concerning the case, particularly those charged with murder. According to the document filed with a local court in Guwahati, festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, Zubeen Garg’s manager Siddartha Sarma, bandmate Sekhar Jyoti Goswami, and co-singer Amritprava Mahanta have been charged under murder-related statutes for their alleged involvement in the incident.
Additionally, Zubeen Garg’s personal security officers, Paresh Baishya and Nandeshwar Bora, have also been cited in the chargesheet on similar accusations. Separately, the singer’s cousin, Sandipan Garg, who accompanied him to Singapore for an event, has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, according to the SIT.
