Kolkata, Jan 19 (NationPress) Seven individuals have been detained regarding the kidnapping and gang-rape of a teenage girl in the Purulia district of West Bengal, according to senior police officials on Monday.
The authorities have initiated a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO).
As per information from law enforcement and family members, the teenage girl hails from Purulia town.
On Friday evening, the 17-year-old girl departed her residence to visit a friend's house. When she failed to return by night, her family grew increasingly concerned.
Ultimately, the girl's father lodged a complaint of kidnapping at the Purulia Sadar police station. Following the complaint, police swiftly initiated an investigation, leading to her rescue later that same night.
During her statement, the young girl recounted her traumatic experience, revealing that she was abducted and sexually assaulted.
The girl informed authorities that while walking on the street at night, she was approached by a group of seven or eight young men who forcefully took her to a field near the railway tracks, where she was gang-raped.
After the harrowing experience, she managed to find her way back home, where the police subsequently located her.
The girl was promptly taken to a hospital for a medical examination once the incident was reported.
Based on her statements, police conducted searches at multiple locations.
On Sunday, authorities arrested seven young men believed to be involved in the crime. One suspect fell ill and was admitted to the hospital, while the other six were presented before a court.
"After the arrests, the six were brought before the Purulia District Court yesterday and have been placed in judicial custody for seven days. The seventh suspect is receiving treatment at the hospital and will be presented in court once he recovers," stated a senior officer from the Purulia police.
Meanwhile, the teenage girl is set to provide her confidential testimony before a magistrate on Monday.
