Kolkata Durga Puja pandals shut after Chorbagan stampede kills 19
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Several major Durga Puja organisers across Kolkata temporarily shut their pandals to visitors on 18 October following a deadly stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin puja pandal that killed 19 people and injured 25 others. The closures were implemented on the instructions of the district administration as authorities moved to prevent further crowd-related incidents during one of Bengal's most heavily attended festivals.
Pandals That Closed
Prominent crowd-pulling committees — including Tala Prattoy, Alipore Sarbojanin, Chetla Agrani, and Ballygunge Sarbojanin — halted visitor entry. The annual show at Allen Park on Kolkata's iconic Park Street was cancelled entirely. Several puja pandals in the Salt Lake area also stopped admitting visitors for the time being.
The Tala Prattoy Durga Puja committee announced the suspension in a Facebook post, stating: 'Tala Prattoy Pandal is closing for time being as per administrative instruction. We care for general public, enjoy puja in a safe manner.' The Santosh Mitra Square Durga Puja Committee in central Kolkata, headed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Sajal Ghosh, also restricted entry and asked people to refrain from visiting.
What Happened at Chorbagan
The stampede broke out at the Chorebagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja Pandal on Muktarambabu Street in north Kolkata when an exceptionally large crowd surged in to view the idols. Tension escalated after a portion of the exit gate structure collapsed, triggering a deadly crush. 17 people were declared dead on arrival at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital; the death toll climbed to 19 by Sunday. At least 25 injured persons are undergoing treatment at multiple hospitals, with the condition of one reported to be critical.
Arrests and Investigation
Police on Sunday arrested seven people, including organisers, in connection with the stampede. A forensic team arrived at the incident site on Sunday to gather evidence. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited the puja pandal at around 1 am, inspecting the site and speaking with police and organisers. He had earlier visited families of the deceased and injured at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital.
Government Response and Compensation
Chief Minister Adhikari announced a compensation of ₹25 lakh and a government job for the family of each person killed. He also ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the circumstances that led to the tragedy. This comes amid longstanding concerns about crowd management at large-scale public events in Kolkata during the festival season, where footfall at popular pandals routinely runs into the hundreds of thousands over a single night.
