Is Intense Cold Gripping J&K with Night Temperatures Dropping Below Zero?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Srinagar, Jan 3 (NationPress) Jammu and Kashmir is currently experiencing severe cold as temperatures have plunged below the freezing mark across the Valley. This has resulted in frozen water taps and puddles. The minimum temperature recorded in Srinagar was minus 1.5 degrees Celsius, while Gulmarg and Pahalgam reported minus 6.5 and minus 5.2 degrees Celsius respectively.
In contrast, Jammu city recorded a relatively milder temperature of 7.9 degrees Celsius, with Katra at 6.6, Batote at 4.2, Banihal at 2.7, and Bhaderwah at minus 1.5 degrees Celsius for the night.
This extreme cold has caused water taps in Srinagar and other towns to freeze, and puddles on streets have also solidified due to the chilling temperatures.
Health experts, particularly cardiologists, have advised individuals with heart conditions to remain indoors during the morning hours. Even during daylight, they recommend wearing multiple layers of warm clothing.
According to specialists, instances of heart attacks increase by approximately 20 percent during the winter months in Kashmir due to rising blood pressure and heightened platelet activity.
Despite the ongoing Chillai Kalan period, which commenced on December 21 and lasts for 40 days, the Valley has yet to witness significant snowfall, with the plains still waiting for their first snow of the season.
The forecast is not optimistic, as meteorologists predict that the weather will remain cloudy, cold, and generally dry until January 20.
As the Chillai Kalan period concludes on January 30, the absence of substantial snowfall could lead to challenging conditions during the summer months.
This winter, Jammu and Kashmir has experienced a 39 percent rain deficit. If heavy snowfall does not occur soon, the perennial water reservoirs in the mountains will fail to replenish, threatening the sustainability of rivers, streams, springs, lakes, and wells during the warmer months.
