Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred the 'Guardian of the Blue Horizon', Seychelles' highest distinction, in recognition of his leadership in environmental conservation and sustainable development. The honour was bestowed during his ongoing three-day State visit to the archipelagic island nation, where he is attending the country's Golden Jubilee National Day celebrations as Guest of Honour.

The 'Guardian of the Blue Horizon' is Seychelles' most prestigious award in the domain of environmental stewardship. It acknowledges Modi's sustained push for green growth, climate action, and sustainable development on the global stage. The recognition adds to a growing list of international honours that have come Modi's way in recent years for his environmental and development agenda.

A Pattern of Global Recognition

This is the latest in a series of high-profile international distinctions for the Prime Minister. In May 2026, Modi was conferred the Agricola Medal — the highest honour of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) — at a ceremony held at the FAO Headquarters in Rome. FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu presented the medal at the historic FAO Plenary Hall, citing Modi's contributions to food security, agricultural development, and farmer welfare, according to the organisation.

Earlier, in 2018, Modi received the Seoul Peace Prize for advancing sustainable economic growth, global cooperation, and inclusive development. That same year, UN Secretary-General António Guterres conferred the Champions of the Earth Award 2018 for Policy Leadership on Modi at a ceremony held at Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra in New Delhi.

Key Deliverables from the State Visit

The diplomatic visit has yielded concrete bilateral outcomes. On the first day of the State visit, PM Modi handed over a 'Made in India' Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) PS LESPWAR, six ambulances, 10 utility vehicles, and five laser radial boats to Seychelles President Patrick Herminie at the Seychelles Coast Guard Base in Victoria. The assets are intended to strengthen Seychelles' maritime surveillance and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) patrol capabilities.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described the handover as a reflection of India's Vision MAHASAGAR — its framework for deepening maritime cooperation across the Indian Ocean region. 'Together as partners. Stronger as one,' the MEA said, noting that the FPV would directly bolster Seychelles' EEZ patrol capabilities.

Bilateral Engagement and Symbolism

On 28 June, PM Modi and President Herminie held a bilateral meeting at the State House in Seychelles, preceded by a formal Guard of Honour accorded to the Prime Minister. The two leaders had earlier planted a sapling of the rare 'Coco de Mer' palm at the Seychelles National Botanical Garden — a gesture underscoring the conservation theme that runs through the visit.

As India and Seychelles mark deepening ties, the visit signals New Delhi's continued strategic interest in the Indian Ocean region, with defence cooperation, maritime security, and climate diplomacy forming the core pillars of the partnership.
