Shah slams Rahul as 'anarchist' at BJP's Karnal Loktantra Bachao rally
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday, 5 November 2026, mounted a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi at the concluding event of the Bharatiya Janata Party's 'Loktantra Bachao, Arajakya Hatao' (Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy) rally in Karnal, Haryana, accusing him of practising anarchy and disrupting parliamentary proceedings amid a broader political clash over alleged electoral irregularities.
The Closing Day in Karnal
The BJP rally, which ran across all party headquarters nationwide from 22 October to 5 November, concluded in Karnal with tens of thousands of party workers in attendance. Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, BJP leader Smriti Irani, and the entire state party leadership joined Shah on stage. Prior to the main address, the leadership participated in a padyatra through Karnal as part of the campaign.
Shah's Broadside Against Rahul Gandhi
Opening his nearly 30-minute Hindi address with Jai Shri Ram slogans, Shah framed the rally as a response to what the BJP characterises as deliberate obstructionism by the Congress. 'You do not allow Parliament to function, nor do you engage in discussions on substantive issues. You have turned creating a ruckus and staging boycotts within Parliament into the very culture of the Congress party,' Shah said, addressing Gandhi directly.
He added: 'You refuse to let Parliament operate, choosing instead to gather crowds on the streets and spread chaos, acting like an anarchist. The Bharatiya Janata Party will respond to you everywhere — in the Parliament, in the legislative Assemblies, in our villages, in our fields, and on the roads.'
Shah also issued what he framed as counsel: 'I still advise you: hold your discussions in Parliament. They wave the Constitution in the air. The Parliament is the very place where one is meant to fulfil constitutional duties. You insult the Parliament, you insult the Speaker, you insult the courts, and yet, you talk about democracy.'
The SIR Controversy and Electoral Allegations
A significant portion of Shah's address was directed at the Congress's claims that electoral roll revisions under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise had led to the deletion of one crore votes. Shah dismissed the allegation, arguing that the Congress had suffered decisive defeats in 2014, 2019, and 2024 general elections — none of which involved a SIR exercise — as well as in Haryana and Maharashtra state elections.
'Rahul baba knows that he is going to lose, which is why he blames the Election Commission and the SIR exercise for his defeats,' Shah said. He went further, challenging Gandhi to write a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting a special session of Parliament exclusively to debate the SIR exercise. 'We are ready to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss the SIR exercise,' he added.
Chief Minister Saini on Electoral Roll Revision
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini defended the Election Commission's ongoing electoral roll revision process, calling it routine and periodic. 'The Congress has concocted a web of lies and, based on these falsehoods, has sought to spread misleading propaganda across the country,' Saini said. He also underscored the foundational principle of democratic equality, noting that the vote of an ordinary citizen — farmer, labourer, or youth — carries equal weight to that of the most powerful individual in the country.
What This Signals
This comes amid a sustained BJP counter-offensive against Congress's campaign questioning the integrity of recent electoral outcomes. The 'Loktantra Bachao' format — structured as a nationwide rally circuit rather than a single event — reflects the BJP's intent to mobilise ground-level cadres ahead of upcoming state elections. Notably, Shah's direct challenge to Gandhi over a parliamentary debate on SIR raises the stakes for the winter session of Parliament, where the confrontation is likely to continue.
