YS Sharmila Reddy Drives Banana Truck to Raise Awareness for Farmers
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Amaravati, March 25 (NationPress) In a striking demonstration of support for troubled banana farmers, YS Sharmila Reddy, the Andhra Pradesh Congress president, took the wheel of a truck filled with bananas and drove it to the Kadapa district Collector's office on Wednesday.
By personally steering the truck, she aimed to underscore the plight of banana farmers grappling with plummeting prices. The truck, laden with bunches of bananas, symbolized their struggles.
During her visit, Sharmila Reddy emphasized the critical challenges faced by farmers and urged the government to take immediate action; she presented a memorandum to the Joint Collector.
Describing the banana farmers' situation as dire, she noted the alarming drop in prices from Rs 26,000 per tonne to a mere Rs 4,000 per tonne. She blamed trader syndicates for manipulating the market, which has led to ongoing financial hardships for farmers.
The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president pointed out that cultivating bananas necessitates a significant investment ranging from Rs 2 to 3 lakh per acre, yielding about 30 tonnes on average. With current market prices, farmers are unable to recoup even their basic expenses.
Sharmila Reddy also raised concerns about the lack of cold storage solutions, which compels farmers to engage in distress sales.
Additionally, she highlighted the absence of crop insurance support, claiming unfulfilled promises to farmers, including overdue insurance payments reportedly amounting to Rs 170 crore.
She criticized previous administrations for not implementing effective price stabilization strategies.
While the previous government pledged a Rs 3,000 crore stabilization fund and the current coalition government allocated Rs 500 crore, she asserted that no substantial financial assistance has reached the farmers.
Calling for immediate action, she demanded fair pricing, stringent measures against trader syndicates, the provision of quality saplings, and the release of funds from the price stabilization scheme to compensate farmers.
Reiterating her commitment, Sharmila Reddy affirmed that the Congress Party will steadfastly support farmers until justice is achieved.
