Shimla's Ram Mandir Hall Faces Controversy Over Proposed Nikah Ceremony
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Shimla, April 7 (NationPress) A significant uproar has emerged in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, as tensions rise regarding a proposed 'Nikah' ceremony set to take place at a hall within the Ram Mandir complex, inciting strong objections from various Hindu organizations.
The situation has led to intense reactions from Hindu groups, who are against holding a Muslim wedding ceremony at a site linked to a temple. These organizations have condemned this move as inappropriate and have threatened protests if the event goes ahead as intended.
The issue has been officially brought to the attention of temple authorities, with Hindu groups voicing their concerns to the managing committee — Sood Sabha. The matter escalated further following statements from members of the temple administration.
Mohammed Nasir, a local resident from Eidgah Colony in Shimla, intended to host his daughter's Nikah ceremony at the Ram Mandir Hall. This proposal has met with strong opposition from the Hindu Sangharsh Samiti, which has vocally resisted the decision.
The Hindu Sangharsh Samiti has asserted that permitting a Muslim family to hold a wedding ceremony within temple grounds is unacceptable.
Leaders from the committee have cautioned that a large-scale demonstration will be organized if the ceremony is not retracted.
Echoing the group's sentiments, leader Madan Thakur threatened symbolic actions, including participating in 'mundan' (ritual tonsuring) and staging protests.
In a statement to IANS, Thakur remarked, "This is a calculated attempt to provoke Hindu sentiments. Certain traitors — our own Jaychands — are involved in this for a mere financial gain. If true brotherhood is the goal, then we should also be allowed to conduct Hanuman Chalisa recitations and Jagrans inside mosques."
He issued a further warning, stating that if what he labeled as anti-Hindu actions are not rescinded, a protest march will occur at the same site on April 11, accompanied by ritual tonsuring.
Amidst the growing controversy, the Sood Sabha has adopted a different stance. The committee's head, Rajiv Sood, declared that the organization honors the feelings of all religious communities and highlighted that similar ceremonies have previously taken place at this venue.
Speaking to IANS, Sood stated, "The consumption of meat, fish, and alcohol is strictly forbidden within temple premises under any circumstances. Hindu sentiments must not be disregarded; the Sangharsh Samiti has presented a memorandum to the authorities, prompting an executive meeting to be convened today to determine the next steps. Both the bride and groom are Muslims, and the marriage is not occurring inside the temple but in a hall within the larger temple complex."
He further emphasized that neither the Indian Constitution nor the internal guidelines of the Sood Sabha permit discrimination based on religion.
He concluded by stating that a final decision on the matter will be announced following consultations.
