Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Feb 22 (NationPress) Eknath Shinde, the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, extended a challenge to the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) on Sunday, urging them to provide evidence for their allegations against the government during the upcoming Budget Session in the state legislature.
In a press conference following a Cabinet meeting, Shinde criticized the opposition for making claims outside of the legislature and encouraged them to address these matters during formal proceedings.
He emphasized that if the opposition possessed reliable evidence of corruption or administrative shortcomings, it should be presented in the legislature for formal discussion and resolution.
Shinde also raised concerns regarding the opposition's organizational cohesion, pointing out the lack of officially recognized Leaders of the Opposition in both the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council.
He stated that decisions related to the appointment of Leaders of the Opposition would be at the discretion of the Assembly Speaker and the Chairman of the Legislative Council, dismissing allegations that the government was hindering these appointments.
The Deputy Chief Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to development and welfare programs, highlighting initiatives such as the Majhi Ladki Bahin program. He expressed confidence that the government's performance would withstand examination during legislative discussions.
Shinde also criticized a recent protest by Youth Congress members at the AI Summit in New Delhi, claiming such demonstrations were inappropriate and detrimental to the country's reputation.
In response to the recent collapse of a pillar at an under-construction Metro site in Mulund, Shinde reported that the state government had promptly taken action, including suspending the responsible Executive Engineer and initiating a thorough safety audit of ongoing infrastructure projects.
He mentioned that the government would provide financial aid of Rs 5 lakh to the families affected by the incident and full medical coverage for the injured. Additionally, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced an extra compensation of Rs 15 lakh.
Shinde concluded by stating that the forthcoming Budget for 2026–27 would prioritize public welfare and development, expressing optimism that it would bring benefits to citizens statewide.
