Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre arrested for assaulting doctors at Kalyan hospital
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre and three others were arrested on 8 July after CCTV footage purportedly showed him and his supporters assaulting doctors and staff at Shastri Nagar Hospital, a municipal facility in Kalyan, Maharashtra. The incident has triggered widespread outrage among medical professionals and healthcare organisations across the state.
What the Police Said
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Suhas Hemade confirmed four arrests, including one woman. 'In this assault case, there are four accused, including one woman. They include local corporator Ramesh Mhatre, Akshay Karande, Rajesh Pawar, and Pramod Nikam,' he told reporters.
According to ACP Hemade, the sequence of events began when a female patient arrived at the hospital and a dispute arose over her treatment. 'The relatives of the patient came along with the accused and assaulted the on-duty doctor, Dr Vaibhav Salunkhe, a female doctor, and a nurse. They misbehaved with them, beat them up, hurled abuses, and threatened them,' he said. A formal complaint was lodged by Dr Salunkhe, and a case has since been registered.
Political Fallout and Party Response
The arrest of a sitting corporator from the ruling Shiv Sena placed the party in a difficult position. Maharashtra Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat condemned the violence but stopped short of an unqualified rebuke. 'Whether it is a male or female doctor, assaulting someone is not an act of courage. Just because the person belongs to our party, we won't defend his actions,' he said.
However, Shirsat also urged doctors to treat patients properly, adding, 'In some cases, even the doctors' behaviour is not good, but still we won't support what the corporator has done.' Critics noted that the caveat risked diluting the government's stated zero-tolerance stance on violence against healthcare workers.
Mhatre's Defence
Despite the CCTV footage and the arrests, Mhatre denied physically assaulting the female doctor. Speaking to a television channel on Wednesday, he claimed he had merely slapped her mobile phone out of her hand because she was not responding to the patient's family. He argued that his intervention helped save the lives of the woman and her newborn, and said he would not apologise. He added, however, that he would express regret if the doctors apologised for their own conduct.
Healthcare Community Reacts
The CCTV footage spread rapidly online, drawing sharp condemnation from medical associations and the broader public. Several healthcare organisations demanded stringent action, stressing that violence against healthcare workers cannot be condoned under any circumstances. This incident comes amid a pattern of rising attacks on hospital staff across Maharashtra, a concern that doctors' bodies have repeatedly flagged to the state government.
What Happens Next
ACP Hemade stated that legal procedures will be followed and action taken accordingly. With the accused in custody and a formal case registered, the matter is now before the courts. Pressure from medical associations is likely to intensify calls for stronger legislative protection for healthcare workers in Maharashtra.
