Karnataka's D.K. Shivakumar Opposes Delimitation Plan, Calls It Political Manipulation
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, April 15 (NationPress) Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar voiced his strong opposition on Wednesday against the Centre's proposed delimitation initiative, which he criticized as a form of political re-engineering detrimental to the interests of southern states.
In a press release, Shivakumar argued that the plan to raise the count of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 850 would systematically undermine the representation of southern states while favoring regions experiencing unchecked population growth. He claimed this move effectively amounts to penalizing progress and good governance.
Reiterating the party's position, he emphasized that the Congress party fully endorses women's reservation in legislative bodies. He credited former Congress President Sonia Gandhi for bringing this issue to the forefront of national discourse. Nonetheless, he insisted that the implementation of women's reservation should remain independent of delimitation or the expansion of Lok Sabha seats.
Shivakumar, also the state Congress president, urged the Union government not to exploit women's empowerment as a facade to advance what he termed a profoundly unjust political agenda. He further criticized the timing of the proposal, asserting that attempting such a significant overhaul of India's democratic structure during election periods, without transparency or proper consultation, raises serious doubts and is unacceptable.
He stressed the importance of maintaining balance within the federal framework, stating that India's true strength lies in fairness rather than domination or manipulation.
Shivakumar asserted that the southern states would unite and voice their concerns collectively to protect the essence of federalism. He vowed that they would not permit the southern region to be politically sidelined under any circumstances.
Previously, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had also expressed worries about the delimitation process.
In response to Siddaramaiah's criticism of the Centre, Union Minister for Food, Public Distribution, and Consumer Affairs, Pralhad Joshi, accused the Congress of attempting to incite divisions by emphasizing a “North-South states” narrative regarding the delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies.
Joshi dismissed Siddaramaiah’s claims that the BJP aims to increase the number of constituencies in northern states where it has a stronger foothold through the delimitation process.
