Golden Chariot train revival: K'taka CM Shivakumar flags off luxury tourism push
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Saturday, 24 October 2026, officially green-lit the revival and active promotion of the Golden Chariot luxury tourist train, calling it a matter of pride for Karnataka and a strategic move to boost tourism, generate employment and spotlight the state's cultural and natural heritage. Shivakumar addressed the media at Majestic and Kengeri railway stations in Bengaluru to mark the occasion.
What the Golden Chariot Offers
The Golden Chariot accommodates approximately 80 passengers and is staffed by around 60 service personnel. The train features two restaurants with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dining options, a spa, a gym, and comfortable overnight accommodation — positioning it among India's premier rail tourism experiences. At the time of the flagging-off, 75 passengers were already aboard for the inaugural revived journey.
The service is being developed through a three-way collaboration between the Karnataka Tourism Department, Indian Railways, and the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).
New Routes and Tourist Circuits
The revived service will cover key Karnataka destinations including Hampi, Belur, the Malnad region, Mysuru, the coastal belt, and Coorg. A new circuit titled 'Jewels of South' has also been proposed, connecting major tourism hubs across southern India — Hampi, Mahabalipuram, Mysuru, Bengaluru, Kochi, and Chettinad. Additionally, a four-day package called 'Dreams of Karnataka' has been readied, with further details to be announced.
On route expansion, Shivakumar noted that consultations with railway officials would be necessary to ensure that the Golden Chariot's operations do not disrupt regular passenger services.
Making Luxury Accessible
'The Golden Chariot aims to introduce Karnataka's tourist destinations to people and create employment opportunities. We do not necessarily need to make profits from it, but we must ensure that it does not incur losses. Everyone's cooperation is necessary,' Shivakumar said.
Notably, the Chief Minister flagged inclusivity as a core objective, stating that luxury train travel should not remain exclusive to the wealthy. The government is reportedly considering discounted fares during the off-season to enable ordinary tourists from Karnataka to experience the state's heritage and natural beauty — a departure from the train's traditionally premium-only positioning.
Political and Institutional Background
Shivakumar acknowledged that the Karnataka Darshana initiative of the Tourism Department had previously stalled. After the Congress government came to power, Tourism Minister K.J. George took the lead in reviving the programme and reshaping it around the Golden Chariot service. This comes amid a broader push by the state government to diversify Karnataka's tourism offering beyond its technology and business identity.
Asked whether Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna had been invited to the launch event, Shivakumar confirmed that invitations had been extended to everyone and that Somanna would participate via video conferencing.
Economic Outlook
Shivakumar described the Golden Chariot as a valuable state asset whose improved utilisation would attract more visitors and generate economic activity around tourist destinations, benefiting local businesses including hotels. With the 'Jewels of South' circuit extending the train's reach across state borders, the initiative could also draw international travellers seeking multi-destination itineraries in peninsular India. Further operational and pricing details are expected to follow in the coming weeks.
