Will CM Siddaramaiah Lead the Charge for MGNREGA's Restoration?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Jan 13 (NationPress) - Karnataka's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah emphasized the need to persist in the fight until the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is reinstated and the Viksit Bharat - Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB—G RAM G) is abolished. Speaking during a preparatory meeting for the 'Save Mahatma Gandhi Employment Guarantee Scheme' movement, he stated, "This initiative must evolve from grassroots to state level. Just as farmers in Northern India rallied against legal changes, we must undertake a similar struggle."
Last month, the AICC Executive Committee convened, expressing grave concern over the elimination of MGNREGA.
The Chief Minister accused the BJP of having an aversion to the name of Mahatma Gandhi.
Reflecting on the tenure of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he noted, "During that time, landmark laws like MGNREGA, the Food Security Act, Employment Guarantee Act, Right to Information Act, Right to Education Act, and Forest Rights Act were established."
Over two decades, MGNREGA provided jobs to 12.16 crore laborers nationally, including 6.21 crore women, he remarked.
"Under MGNREGA, rural laborers had the right to request work year-round and could labor in their home villages and on their own lands. However, this has been altered under the VB-G RAM G Act," Siddaramaiah contended.
He highlighted that previously, workers had the right to approach the courts if employment was not granted under the Act.
CM Siddaramaiah commented, "Now, the central government will dictate the type and location of work via notifications, compelling workers to labor only at designated sites."
"States now shoulder 40% of the costs, potentially amounting to around Rs 2,500 crore for Karnataka. This is why we initiated the NREGA Save Movement. It must transform into a popular uprising," the Chief Minister concluded.
