Patna, Nov 22 (NationPress) In a significant administrative overhaul in Bihar, the Home Department has been removed from the control of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for the first time in two decades. Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Samrat Choudhary has now assumed responsibility for this crucial ministry.
This decision has sparked intense political reactions, with the JD(U) supporting the change, while the Opposition argues that the BJP now effectively dominates the state government.
Choudhary will have full authority over Bihar's law enforcement, with senior police officials from the DGP to ADG, IG, SP, and DSP reporting directly to him. This shift is particularly notable due to Choudhary's prior remarks advocating for a UP-style crackdown on crime.
In a statement to IANS, JD(U) Minister Ashok Choudhary remarked, "It's commendable that Samrat Choudhary has been entrusted with the Home Ministry. His youth and dedication will be beneficial for the ministry. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar made this decision after careful thought."
However, the Mahagathbandhan has sharply condemned this development, asserting that the BJP seeks to weaken the JD(U) and marginalize the Chief Minister.
RJD spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari expressed to IANS, "We have always maintained that the BJP intends to keep Nitish Kumar as a figurehead while they govern. This has now become evident. Nitish Kumar's position is precarious, and his party is on the brink of collapse."
Similarly, Congress spokesperson Surendra Rajput claimed that Nitish Kumar is being sidelined within his own administration.
"With Samrat Choudhary taking control of the Home Ministry from Nitish Kumar, it is apparent that Nitish Kumar is being pushed aside. The BJP is systematically consolidating power over Nitish Kumar's party and government. They are doing this through coercive means. Just as the BJP has taken over the ministerial structure, they are now extending their control over all ministries, seeking to dominate the ideology of the JD(U)," Rajput told IANS.
With Choudhary's new role, speculation is rife regarding potential alterations in policing strategies, including possibilities of encounters, bulldozer actions, and enhanced enforcement measures.
The new Home Minister will have final say in issues related to major crimes, riots, communal strife, public disorder, and significant arrests throughout Bihar.
Additionally, he will oversee the postings and transfers of IPS officers and senior positions such as SPs, DIGs, and IGs, with the authority to order suspensions when deemed necessary. Control over these administrative powers is seen as a critical tool in state governance.
With the Home Department now under BJP leadership for the first time in many years, both political analysts and administrative observers anticipate a dramatic shift in the trajectory of law enforcement and governance in Bihar.
