Maharashtra Government Launches SIT Investigation into Jalgaon Land Acquisition Fraud
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 11 (NationPress) In a significant development, Maharashtra's Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule revealed in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) will be formed to investigate alleged extensive irregularities related to land acquisition for National Highways and other initiatives in Jalgaon district. This SIT will be led by Divisional Commissioner Pravin Gedam.
The Minister emphasized that the investigation team will comprise two IAS officers and one IPS officer to ensure a comprehensive examination of the criminal elements involved. This announcement followed a 'Calling Attention' motion introduced by MLA Mangesh Chavan, who raised concerns about the questionable actions of various government departments.
Minister Bawankule acknowledged that the investigation’s scope is broad, encompassing the Revenue Department, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the Stamp Duty Department, the Land Acquisition Office, Land Records (Bhumi Abhilekh), and local Talathi offices. "It's crucial to trace the discrepancies from the initial entries to the final award preparations. This committee will analyze the compensation awards concerning nine villages," he stated.
The Revenue Minister highlighted that while the government successfully halted the compensation disbursements, uncovering the potential criminal intent remains a priority.
"Fortunately, we managed to stop the land acquisition compensation payments on time; thus, no financial loss has occurred to the state treasury. However, was there an 'attempt' to defraud the government? Were project maps manipulated to serve specific interests? The SIT will delve into these matters and will report its findings to the House within three months," he remarked.
During the session, MLA Chavan and other legislators accused the existence of a profound "nexus" among officials.
Chavan pointed out attempts to secure exorbitant compensation by falsely claiming orchards on lands officially registered under the names of the Central Government or the President.
"This is part of a significant syndicate. We demand that culpable officials face not only an inquiry but also suspension and criminal charges," Chavan insisted.
