Shillong, July 13 (NationPress) Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman wrapped up her four-day visit to Meghalaya on Sunday, culminating in a visit to the historic Ramakrishna Mission School in Sohra, where she honored Swami Vivekananda, as reported by government officials.
During her time in the state, Meghalaya celebrated a remarkable achievement in its development trajectory as she inaugurated and laid the groundwork for multiple critical projects valued at Rs 1,087.81 crore.
At an integrated public event held at the LARITI – International Centre for Performing Arts and Culture earlier this week, Union Minister Sitharaman commended Meghalaya's consistent progress and visionary leadership under Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.
Emphasizing the Centre's backing, the Union Finance Minister noted that Meghalaya has received a total of Rs 5,400 crore under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme.
She praised the effective utilization of funds, stating, "I am pleased that the government has effectively employed the funds for capital assets. I wish to acknowledge Meghalaya's endeavors. The funds are being fully utilized. Some states have struggled to utilize their entire allocation, but Meghalaya has maximized its share."
Additionally, the Union Finance Minister visited the vocational training center at the Ramakrishna Mission School on Sunday, engaging with approximately 100 women undergoing free weaving training — a key empowerment initiative she lauded.
Swami Anuragananda, Secretary of the Mission, emphasized Union Minister Sitharaman’s lasting connection to the institution.
"She took a keen interest in our century-long journey, covering education, healthcare, and community service, acknowledging our impact," he remarked.
The Union Minister also interacted with local entrepreneurs and trainees, praising their resilience.
The school's distinguished alumni — including former Meghalaya Chief Minister B.B. Lyngdoh, MP G.G. Swell, and former Assembly Speaker Donkupar Roy — captured her attention, highlighting the institution's role in nurturing leaders.
This visit coincided with the school's centenary celebrations, where Union Minister Sitharaman planted a sapling, symbolizing an enduring legacy.
Prominent figures such as Padma Shri awardee Theilin Phanbuh, a women’s welfare advocate, and 90-year-old Lolin Lyndem — an alumnus and former educator — participated in the event.
