Shillong, July 11 (NationPress) A significant milestone in the development trajectory of Meghalaya was marked on Friday as Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman laid the foundation stones and inaugurated various transformative projects totaling Rs 1,087.81 crore in the state.
During an Integrated Public Programme at the LARITI - International Centre for Performing Arts and Culture, FM Sitharaman commended Meghalaya for its consistent development and visionary leadership under CM Conrad K. Sangma.
She announced that a remarkable Rs 5,400 crore has been earmarked for Meghalaya under the Special Assistance to State for Capital Investment (SASCI), stating, "I am pleased that the state has effectively utilized these funds for capital assets. It is commendable that Meghalaya has fully utilized its allocation, unlike some other states that struggle to do so."
FM Sitharaman emphasized the Union Government's commitment to the Northeast, viewing it as a region ripe for empowerment, action, strengthening, and transformation.
She noted the construction of over 540 km of roads in Meghalaya and a remarkable five-fold increase in optical fiber coverage since 2014.
Furthermore, she praised the state for its achievements in initiatives like Jal Jeevan Mission, PM Awas Yojana, PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, and Swachh Bharat Mission.
In his speech, CM Sangma expressed gratitude to the Union Government for its ongoing support.
He remarked, "The visit of the Union Finance Minister is significant not only for official programs but also for connecting with the citizens and understanding the challenges we face, enabling us to seek necessary guidance and solutions moving forward."
Reiterating the government's model of purpose-driven, target-oriented, and results-based governance, CM Sangma emphasized Meghalaya's ambition to rank among India's top-10 states by 2032.
He informed the Finance Minister that Meghalaya has effectively leveraged numerous schemes and projects through Externally Aided Projects (EAPs), which play a vital role in funding for smaller states.
These initiatives have facilitated a diverse range of developmental projects, with total funding approaching Rs 12,000 crore, significantly contributing to the state's overall growth.
