Northeast India shifts from instability to growth: Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday, 15 June 2026, declared that the Northeast has moved beyond decades of conflict and instability, entering an era of sustained peace, political stability, and rapid economic growth. Speaking at the inauguration of the North East India Infrastructure Summit and Exhibition (NEIINFRA) 2026 in Shillong, Sangma positioned the region as a pivotal driver of India's broader development agenda.
Meghalaya's Economic Momentum
Addressing an audience of policymakers, investors, industry leaders, and government officials, Sangma highlighted Meghalaya's emergence as one of India's fastest-growing states. The state reportedly ranks third nationally in GDP growth over the past five years, underpinned by a doubling of the state budget, a six-fold increase in capital expenditure, and significant infrastructure investments.
According to Sangma, Meghalaya has attracted nearly ₹50,000 crore in road infrastructure investments alone, substantially improving intra-state connectivity and laying the groundwork for sustained economic expansion.
What NEIINFRA 2026 Aims to Achieve
The two-day summit has drawn more than 1,500 delegates and representatives from all eight Northeastern states, with sessions centred on infrastructure development, connectivity, logistics, urban planning, energy, and investment promotion. Sangma described the event as more than a policy gathering.
'The summit should not just be a programme but the beginning of a long journey and partnership that will take the government, private sector and the public to new heights in the days to come,' Sangma said.
He emphasised that the summit's core objective is to bring together governments, investors, and industry stakeholders to jointly identify opportunities and address long-standing developmental challenges across the region.
Peace as a Catalyst for Investment
Sangma argued that improved peace and stability across the Northeast have directly enhanced the investment climate, enabling state governments to shift focus from conflict management to long-term economic planning. This comes amid a broader national push to integrate the region more deeply into India's economic mainstream, aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of making the Northeast an integral pillar of the country's growth story.
Notably, the Northeast has historically been marked by insurgency, ethnic tensions, and infrastructure deficits — making the current growth narrative a significant departure from the region's recent past.
Gateway to Southeast Asia
The Chief Minister also reiterated the Northeast's strategic value as India's gateway to Southeast Asia, arguing that enhanced connectivity projects and targeted investments could transform the region into a major trade and logistics hub. Meghalaya, he said, remains committed to leveraging infrastructure, tourism, information technology, and entrepreneurship to attract investment and generate sustainable, inclusive growth.
With NEIINFRA 2026 now underway, the region's ability to convert summit commitments into on-ground investment will be the key measure of whether this growth story holds.
