An official from SJVN Limited revealed that the 3,097 MW Etalin Hydro-Electric Project was acquired by the company along with four additional hydro projects in Arunachal Pradesh, summing up to a total of 5097 MW, following the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Arunachal Pradesh government on August 12, 2023.

All five hydro power facilities are situated in the Dibang Valley district.

According to SJVN Limited Chairman and Managing Director Raj Kumar Chaudhary, the company is a prominent public sector entity engaged in the development of hydro, solar, wind, and thermal energy projects both in India and internationally.

With a diverse portfolio and a strong commitment to sustainability, SJVN continues to be a crucial player in India’s energy transition, he stated.

The Etalin Hydro-Electric Project in Dibang Valley district plans to construct two dams – one on the Dri River and another on the Talo (Tangon) River, accompanied by an underground powerhouse complex located just before the confluence of the two rivers near Etalin village. The project is expected to be operational by December 2033.

SJVN is dedicated to the responsible and inclusive development of Arunachal Pradesh. The disbursement of this compensation amount is a significant move in recognizing the rights of local communities while facilitating the advancement of crucial infrastructure projects for the nation,” stated the CMD.

Officials mentioned that in a significant effort to boost hydro-power development in Arunachal Pradesh, SJVN Limited has disbursed a land compensation sum of Rs 269.98 crore for the Etalin project.

During a review meeting led by Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Thursday at the Tawang circuit house, Chaudhary noted that the land compensation amount was deposited into the joint account of the relevant district officials in Dibang Valley on March 26.

In the review meeting, the Chief Minister recommended that power developers already operating in the state consider smaller projects in their respective river basins and pursue them, if feasible, to enhance the hydropower capacity of the state. In addition to SJVN Ltd, three other CPSUs – National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO), and Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited (THDCIL) – are also in the process of commissioning several large-scale hydro-electric power projects in Arunachal Pradesh.
