Sonia Gandhi joins Instagram, reveals first look of memoir 'Belonging'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi made her social media debut on Thursday, 22 October 2026, joining Instagram and sharing the first look of her upcoming memoir, 'Belonging: A Journey of Love'. The book is set for a worldwide release on 10 November 2026, with pre-orders already open.
Sonia Gandhi's First Instagram Post
In her debut post, Gandhi wrote: 'Hello everyone, I'm truly grateful to share this moment with you all: the first look of Belonging: A Journey of Love. It is a story of love, duty, loss, and finding a place to belong. I look forward to sharing it with you.' The accompanying video shows her receiving the first physical copies of the book and sharing sweets with her daughter and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the two also seen embracing.
Gandhi had no social media presence prior to this. She has already attracted over 10,700 followers on Instagram and follows her children — Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka — along with the official Indian National Congress (INC) account.
About the Memoir
The book is being published globally by Alfred A. Knopf, with HarperCollins India handling its domestic release. In a post on X, HarperCollins India described it as 'one of the most anticipated political memoirs of our time,' adding that 'Belonging is a dramatic and deeply personal story of love, identity, duty and belonging, and offers a rare insider's view of India's journey.' The 10 November release date applies to the India edition as well.
The Penguin Controversy
The memoir's path to publication was not without controversy. Reports had earlier surfaced that Penguin Random House India declined to publish the book following an alleged disagreement over editorial changes — claims the publishing house itself disputed. In a formal statement, Penguin Random House India said it 'is not the publisher of Belonging in India,' and clarified that 'any suggestion that Penguin Random House India decided not to publish Belonging because the author declined editorial changes does not accurately reflect the circumstances.'
The publisher added that fact-checking and editorial recommendations are 'a normal part of the publishing process,' and that its position throughout the discussions 'was that we remained willing and keen to publish the book.' It declined to comment further on what it described as 'confidential discussions with the author.'
Significance and What to Watch
Sonia Gandhi remains one of the most closely watched figures in Indian politics, having led the Congress for over two decades. Her decision to join Instagram — and to debut with a personal memoir rather than a political statement — marks a notably different mode of public engagement. The book's release on 10 November 2026 is expected to generate significant political and literary attention, particularly given its promise of a 'rare insider's view' of India's recent history.
