Srinagar Surrounded by Fog; Snowfall Anticipated This Weekend in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 3 (NationPress) Frigid temperatures continued to grip Kashmir on Friday as a dense fog blanket made both pedestrian and traffic movement challenging in the morning in J&K’s Srinagar city.
A thick layer of fog enveloped Srinagar and its surrounding areas as the relentless cold persisted.
The Meteorological (MeT) Department reported, “On January 3, generally cloudy conditions with light snow in isolated higher elevations are anticipated. From January 4 to 6, a Moderate to Strong Western Disturbance (WD) is expected, leading to cloudy skies with light to moderate rain in Jammu and snow across many regions of J&K, with peak activity projected from the night of the 4th to late night on the 5th and into the morning of the 6th.”
Additionally, it stated, “From January 7 to 10, generally cloudy and dry weather is predicted, while on January 11-12, generally cloudy conditions with light snow in isolated areas are expected.”
The MeT department also released an advisory, noting, “Given the impending snowfall, sub-zero temperatures, and icy road conditions (both plains and higher regions), tourists, travelers, and transport operators are advised to make appropriate plans and follow administrative and traffic advisories. There is a possibility of heavy snowfall in isolated higher areas from the night of the 4th to late night on the 5th.”
Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of -2.2 degrees Celsius, while Gulmarg and Pahalgam both registered -4.5 degrees.
In Jammu city, the temperature was 7.3 degrees, Katra town at 11 degrees, Batote at 5.8 degrees, Banihal at 2 degrees, and Bhaderwah at 2.3 degrees as the lowest temperatures of the night.
The 40-day period of severe winter cold known as ‘Chillai Kalan’ commenced on December 21 and will conclude on January 30.
Almost all water bodies, including lakes, springs, streams, and wells, have partially frozen across the Valley.
The extremely slippery roads have resulted in a surge of patients presenting daily at Srinagar’s Bone & Joint Hospital with fractures, which is the only specialized medical facility for bone-related issues in the Kashmir Valley.
