Cold Weather Expected to Strengthen in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar, Dec 15 (NationPress) Cold weather conditions are anticipated to strengthen further in Jammu and Kashmir as the Meteorological (MeT) office released an advisory on Sunday indicating light snowfall in the higher altitudes on December 22.
The minimum temperature recorded in Srinagar city on Sunday was minus 3.4 degrees Celsius, while it was minus 3.8 in Gulmarg and minus 4.8 in Pahalgam.
Jammu city noted a minimum temperature of 6.6, Katra at 8.4, Batote at 6, Banihal at 1.8, and Bhaderwah at 3.9.
The MeT office has predicted predominantly cold, dry weather until December 21 and a generally cloudy sky with light snowfall over the higher altitudes late evening/night of December 21 leading into the early morning of December 22.
“Considering the impending snowfall, sub-freezing temperatures, and icy conditions on important roadways and higher altitudes, tourists, travelers, and transporters are urged to adhere to administrative and traffic advisories,” stated the MeT office.
Due to the severe cold, a noticeable decrease in the number of people and vehicles can be seen on the roads during the morning and evening hours in Srinagar and various towns throughout the Valley.
The 40-day-long period of extreme winter cold known as ‘Chillai Kalan’ is set to commence on December 21 and conclude on January 30. During this period of severe winter chill, the differential between maximum and minimum temperatures diminishes, amplifying the chill factor.
Most water bodies typically undergo partial freezing during the Chillai Kalan as cold winds sweep from lakes, rivers, and streams into the mainland.
The traditional garment known as the ‘Pheran’ remains the preferred choice for locals during the intense cold. People often keep a firepot filled with embers, called the ‘Kangri’, woven in a willow basket beneath the Pheran for immediate warmth.
Amidst power shortages, this traditional attire and the Kangri continue to be the best means for Kashmiris to combat the cold during the winter months.
