Bhubaneswar, July 21 (NationPress) The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) has recently established a fact-finding committee to probe the serious rape accusations against Udit Pradhan, who is the president of the party’s student wing and has been suspended by the NSUI.
OPCC's President, Bhakta Charan Das, has instructed this newly formed committee to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident, engage in discussions with the complainant, and provide a thorough report to the state party headquarters promptly.
The committee consists of Barabati -- Cuttack MLA Sofia Firdous, OPCC Secretary Dr. Debasmita Sharma, former MLA candidate Sonali Sahoo, and OPCC Spokespersons Jayashree Patra and Manisha Das Pattnaik.
The Chair of the fact-finding Committee has been designated to Sasmita Behera, the Vice President of OPCC.
In a significant turn of events, Pradhan was suspended from the NSUI by its national President Varun Choudhury on the same day.
“Given the recent developments, the NSUI Odisha State President has been suspended effective immediately, pending an inquiry. NSUI upholds a strict zero-tolerance stance against gender-based injustice and remains steadfast in its commitment to accountability and justice. Our resolve to seek justice for the victim from Balasore is unwavering,” the order stated.
Pradhan was apprehended by the Mancheswar Police in Bhubaneswar for allegedly raping a 19-year-old female engineering student after allegedly spiking her soft drink with intoxicants.
As per police reports, Udit was taken into custody late on Sunday night and is scheduled to be presented in court on Monday.
This arrest was made following a formal complaint filed by the victim on Sunday.
In statements to the media, ACP Biswa Ranjan Senapati reported that on March 18, the victim had gone out with a friend, whom she identified as her boyfriend.
During this outing, Udit Pradhan reportedly joined them in a vehicle. Initially, the girl did not recognize Pradhan but later learned of his political role as the state president of NSUI.
The group ended up at a hotel in the Mancheswar area where a party was hosted. The victim was allegedly offered a drug-laced soft drink by Pradhan.
Senapati noted that the girl later indicated she felt ill and requested to return home. When her condition deteriorated, her boyfriend departed.
According to the complaint, upon regaining consciousness, the girl realized she had been sexually assaulted. She was allegedly threatened and warned against discussing the incident, which caused her to remain silent for some time out of fear.
Authorities have also interrogated other individuals who were reportedly present during the incident. “So far, four individuals have been identified as being involved, with two already questioned. The involvement of others is currently under review,” the ACP added.
CCTV footage from the hotel is under analysis, and the details of room bookings are being scrutinized to ascertain who reserved the room and under whose name it was registered.
Further investigations are ongoing to locate hotel staff, other guests, and any digital evidence.
