Bhubaneswar, Feb 27 (NationPress) The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) has established a fact-finding committee to examine incidents of atrocities against women that have been reported in the state since the BJP assumed power.

During the announcement of the committee's formation, the newly appointed OPCC President Bhakta Charan Das stated on Thursday that the committee will conduct an on-ground investigation into specific incidents of crimes against women.

“In the past eight months of the current BJP government’s administration in Odisha, over 1,600 cases related to crimes against women have emerged, averaging nearly seven cases daily,” he mentioned.

Das further noted that the increasing frequency of such incidents has raised significant concerns regarding women’s safety in the state.

“We have assembled this fact-finding committee to evaluate the actual situation; committee members will engage with all stakeholders related to the women atrocity cases documented over the last eight months and compile a report. We will address this matter earnestly with the government and the public,” Das emphasized.

He added that the party will take all necessary measures to ensure the state government addresses issues related to women’s atrocities with utmost seriousness.

In relation to the KIIT controversy, the OPCC president demanded strict actions against anyone found culpable regarding the suicide of the Nepali girl and the subsequent assaults on other Nepali students by the private university's authorities in Bhubaneswar.

Both opposition parties, Congress and BJD, have been vocal about the worsening law and order situation in the state under the BJP administration.

Legislators from both opposition parties have also raised the deteriorating law and order issue during the first phase of the current Odisha Assembly session a few days ago.

Recently, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi disclosed in the Odisha Assembly that approximately 30,943 cases related to violence against women were registered in Odisha during 2024.
