Bhubaneswar, June 19 (NationPress) The Congress party has dispatched a five-member fact-finding team to Odisha in response to the appalling incident involving the gang rape of a college student at Gopalpur in Ganjam district. This investigation also addresses the concerning rise in atrocities against women in the state over recent years.
“In light of the shocking rape incident reported from Gopalpur, the increasing number of women facing violence, and the alarming statistics indicating thousands of missing women, the Hon'ble Congress President has tasked a fact-finding team to travel to Odisha and deliver a thorough report on the situation,” stated an order issued by the AICC on Thursday.
Congress leader Deepa Dasmunshi has been appointed as the Convenor of the committee, which includes three women MPs—Ranjeet Ranjan, Praniti Shinde, and S. Jothimani—along with senior leader Shobha Oza.
On Thursday, the Indian National Congress also held a press conference in the national capital regarding the surge in cases of women's atrocities in Odisha.
During the media briefing, the President of the All India Mahila Congress and a Member of the Congress Working Committee, Alaka Lamba, alleged, “Approximately 36,000 women and 8,400 girls are currently missing in Odisha. The critical question remains: how many of these women and girls has the state government successfully located?”
Congress MLA from Barabati-Cuttack, Sofia Firdous, vehemently criticized the state government, asserting that since the BJP took power in Odisha, 28,000 women have been victims of crimes. She questioned the justice received by these individuals.
“In the past year, no investigation reports have been released. Furthermore, there has been a lack of high-level cabinet meetings addressing this pressing matter. When will accountability be enforced within the state police? Without decisive action, these disheartening statistics will only escalate. We demand justice for women! The government must be held accountable and ensure the safety and dignity of every woman!” proclaimed Firdous.
The BJP-led state administration has faced substantial criticism following the recent gang rape incident involving a college student at the Gopalpur sea beach on June 15.
