On Independence Day, August 15, 2026, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu rolled out a sweeping employment push — filling thousands of government posts across forests, schools, police, and village councils, and raising the monthly honorarium for frontline forest workers by 20 percent.

The announcement covers a wide arc of the state's workforce. The 2,061 Van Mitra (forest friend) positions — already filled by the current government — will now carry a monthly honorarium of ₹12,000, up from ₹10,000. Van Mitras are community-level forest guardians posted across Himachal's dense hill districts, and the raise marks a direct acknowledgment that their earlier pay had not kept pace with the cost of living in remote areas.

Village councils and schools get new posts

Sukhu announced that 400 Multi-Task Worker posts will be filled across all gram panchayats in the state, alongside 200 Junior Assistant Library posts in the education department. A further 280 Job Trainee Technical Assistant positions under district councils are also in the pipeline. The most visible addition for rural communities: every one of Himachal's 1,975 senior secondary schools will receive both a dedicated watchman and a multi-task worker — a move that addresses long-standing gaps in non-teaching support staff.

Police constable drive gets an age waiver

On the law-enforcement front, the government had already recruited 1,088 constables. Now, 734 additional constable posts are being filled — and to widen the applicant pool, candidates will receive a one-time age relaxation of one year beyond the standard upper limit. For Home Guards, the upper age ceiling has been raised more substantially: from 28 years to 33 years, a five-year jump that opens the door for a significantly larger cohort of applicants who had aged out under the old rules.

A pattern of incremental hiring since 2022

The Congress government that took office in December 2022 has made filling long-pending vacancies a signature commitment. State governments across India routinely use recruitment drives and stipend revisions to signal governance delivery — particularly ahead of or during high-visibility occasions. Announcing these measures on Independence Day amplifies the political messaging: jobs as a form of freedom. The real test will come when official notification windows open and candidates begin the application process.

With thousands of posts spanning forests, classrooms, police stations, and panchayat offices, Himachal Pradesh's hiring push is one of the more comprehensive state-level employment announcements of the year — and Sukhu has now staked his government's credibility on delivering each one.
