Bhubaneswar, March 24 (NationPress) In a significant setback to Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) operations in Odisha, prominent Maoist leader and State Committee member Sukru, alongside four other Naxalite members, surrendered to the Kandhamal Police, as stated by Sanjeeb Panda, ADG (Anti-Naxal Operations), Odisha Police on Tuesday.

The Maoist figure Sukru, who had a bounty of Rs 55 lakh, has been among the most sought-after CPI (Maoist) operatives from the region.

“Sukru, along with four fellow Naxals, turned himself in to the Kandhamal authorities on Tuesday. He was in possession of Rs 55 lakh while we are currently verifying the identities of his associates who also surrendered,” Panda communicated to IANS.

Sukru, hailing from the Malkangiri district in Odisha, was commanding a unit of the eighth company of a CPI (Maoist) faction consisting of approximately 13 members. It has been reported that he was compelled to surrender after security forces encircled his hideout within the Kandhamal district forests.

Panda also mentioned that the active Maoist presence in the state has now dwindled to single digits.

He confirmed that security personnel have heightened combing operations to apprehend remaining Maoists, including Divisional Committee Member Shila alias Nagamani.

Panda indicated that Sukru and the others will formally disarm in a special event planned for Wednesday in Kandhamal. They have already surrendered their firearms, including an AK-47.

It’s notable that Sukru is implicated in the violent killing of Maoist commander Anwesh, who had a Rs 27.50 lakh bounty on his head and was gearing up to surrender, which displeased senior CPI (Maoist) leaders.

Reports suggest that on January 29, under Sukru's orders, Maoist cadre Jagesh executed Anwesh by slitting his throat, subsequently hiding the body in the Kandhamal forest. The remains of Anwesh were discovered by Kandhamal Police on February 25.

Meanwhile, both Jagesh and a female cadre lost their lives during an encounter on February 22.

In an interview with IANS, ADG Panda confirmed that despite his surrender, Sukru will face legal proceedings regarding the murder of Anwesh.
