Thiruvananthapuram, May 12 (NationPress) In a historic move, the Congress party in Kerala has appointed the son of a farmer as its new president. Sunny Joseph, a 72-year-old three-time legislator, officially took over the role during a vibrant ceremony on Monday.
Notably, it was esteemed CWC member A.K. Antony who highlighted this significant moment when Joseph and his team visited to seek his blessings.
“I have a special fondness for two groups within Kerala's society: the fisherfolk and farmers. The rise of a farmer’s son, Sunny Joseph, marks a groundbreaking event in the history of the Congress party in Kerala. I am confident that his gentle demeanor and maturity will lead to a Congress-led UDF government in Kerala next year,” remarked Antony.
At approximately 9:45 a.m., the Congress party headquarters was bustling with enthusiasm. The arrival of both the outgoing president, K. Sudhakaran, and Joseph was met with challenges as they made their way to the auditorium.
The event was graced by various dignitaries, including AICC general secretary (organization) K.C. Venugopal, Kerala party in charge, Deepadas Munshi, and Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, V.D. Satheesan, among others.
In his farewell address, Sudhakaran expressed his long-standing association with Joseph, having known him for decades due to their shared roots.
“I have complete faith in Sunny, and he will undertake a mission that every Congress member would take pride in. We must all rally behind him, especially with elections approaching. Our goal is to restore the Congress-led UDF to power,” he stated, amid resounding applause as he passed the leadership baton.
Venugopal congratulated Joseph on his new role and praised Sudhakaran for his commendable service since 2021.
“I have known Sunny for many years, and his calm nature and thoughtful responses are his strengths. The Congress operates as a unified team, and I am confident that Sunny will excel as our leader, guiding us to victories in the upcoming local and Assembly elections,” added Venugopal.
Satheesan assured the national party leadership that this new team would receive unwavering support to establish a Congress-led UDF government after next year’s Assembly elections.
Munshi urged all Congress workers to intensify their efforts to oust the Left government.
All eyes are now on the newly formed team led by Sunny Joseph. His first challenge is the impending Nilambur Assembly by-election, which could be announced soon. Nilambur is currently held by P.V. Anvar, an independent legislator allied with the CPI(M), who resigned after a fallout with CM Vijayan and is now aligned with the Congress-led UDF.
