Surat floods: 3,400+ rescued, 3,900 evacuated after 19 inches of rain in 38 hours
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
More than 3,400 people have been rescued and nearly 3,900 evacuated after exceptionally heavy rainfall inundated large parts of Surat over two days, triggering large-scale emergency operations by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local authorities. The city recorded a staggering 19 inches of rain in just 38 hours, submerging residential neighbourhoods and disrupting trade in one of India's largest textile hubs.
Scale of Rescue Operations
Authorities confirmed that 3,416 people were rescued and 3,862 residents shifted to safer locations as floodwaters swept into low-lying areas. Relief teams distributed 9,563 food packets to those sheltered in relief camps across the city.
In Godadara, rescue teams evacuated 313 people to safer shelters. At Pandesara's Shriram Nagar Society, the NDRF rescued 85 people — comprising 36 men, 27 women, and 22 children — after floodwaters entered residential premises. NDRF Team 06 also conducted operations in the Mithikhadi area, where women rescuers assisted in safely evacuating residents.
In Surat rural district, 7.59 inches of rainfall was recorded in the last 24 hours. In Palsana taluka, 19 people were evacuated, with shelter and food arranged for them.
Textile Trade Hit Hard
The deluge dealt a severe blow to Surat's textile industry. More than 500 shops at the Raghukul Textile Market were inundated after continuous rain over two days, causing extensive damage to stock and infrastructure. Water levels began receding once rainfall eased, allowing traders to begin assessing their losses.
Dinesh Kataria, General Secretary of the Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association, described the scale as unprecedented. 'The city received an estimated 15 to 20 inches of rain yesterday... something we had never imagined would happen in Surat. Such rainfall is usually associated with places like Cherrapunji. The heavy rain caused water to gush in from all sides, flooding basements and even reaching ground-level shops. Many traders have suffered losses worth crores of rupees,' he said.
IMD Forecast and Ongoing Risk
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that rainfall over Surat is expected to moderate in the coming days, with no heavy rain warning currently in place for the city following the recent spell. However, active monsoon conditions are expected to persist across Gujarat, with heavy to very heavy rainfall still likely in parts of south Gujarat and a flash flood risk remaining for several districts.
Authorities Urge Vigilance
Officials have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow official advisories as the monsoon season continues. This is among the most intense rainfall events Surat has recorded in recent memory, and the full extent of damage — to homes, businesses, and infrastructure — is still being assessed as waters recede.
