Kochi, July 9 (NationPress) The dispute surrounding the latest film starring Union Minister of State for Tourism Suresh Gopi has been resolved, as the creators have agreed to change the film's title in response to objections from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
The film, originally named Janaki vs State of Kerala, will henceforth be known as Janaki. V vs State of Kerala.
The legal matter, which had been addressed in the Kerala High Court four times over the last two weeks, was reviewed again on Wednesday. During this session, which took place both before and after lunch, the production team informed the court of their choice to modify the film's title.
Rajya Sabha MP Haris Beeran, representing the film team, stated that the decision was a mutual agreement between both parties.
“Initially, the CBFC had proposed 96 cuts, but after discussions, that count has been reduced to just two. We have agreed to mute two dialogues, although it was not an easy choice. The title change was ultimately a commercial decision. A significant amount of money has been invested in the film, and while we believed we could win the case, further delays would result in substantial losses,” Beeran noted.
He added that the team had already finalized an OTT release agreement, and with the Onam release window approaching, time was crucial. “The CBFC also demonstrated flexibility. With both sides in agreement, the issue has been resolved,” he mentioned.
Beeran further announced that a new copy of the film with the updated title would be submitted to the CBFC within 24 hours. The High Court has instructed the CBFC to issue the certification within three days of submission. The next hearing is set for July 16, and the creators are hopeful for a release on July 18.
Director Praveen Kumar expressed his relief and happiness that the issue had been settled. “We will resubmit the film tomorrow,” he confirmed.
The film was initially scheduled for release on June 27 but faced delays after the CBFC raised concerns about the use of ‘Janaki’ in the title, citing violations of government guidelines under Section 5B(2) of the Cinematograph Act.
During a prior hearing on July 2, Justice N. Nagaresh, presiding over the case, remarked that the character ‘Janaki’—a survivor of sexual assault seeking justice—did not warrant any objections for having a mythological name.
“She is not a rapist. If a rapist were named Rama, Krishna, or Janaki, then I could understand the concern. But here, she is the heroine, fighting for justice,” the judge observed.
Throughout this controversy, Suresh Gopi maintained silence. With the matter now resolved, all involved parties have expressed relief.
