Four members of the same family, including a local Indian National Congress (INC) leader and former Sarpanch, were killed on Thursday morning, 29 May 2025, when their moving SUV suddenly caught fire in the Borada police station area of Rajasthan's Ajmer district, approximately 60 kilometres from Ajmer city. The blaze reduced the vehicle to ashes before rescue teams could intervene, leaving no chance of survival for the occupants.

How the tragedy unfolded

Preliminary information suggests that Pusi Devi, a former Sarpanch and the family matriarch, had complained of chest pain in the early hours of the morning. Her son, Ramsingh Chaudhary — also a former Sarpanch and District Council member — was reportedly driving her to a hospital when the SUV burst into flames while in motion near the stretch between Kashir and Borada villages. His wife and niece, Mahima, were also travelling in the vehicle at the time.

According to police, three victims died at the spot, while the fourth succumbed to severe burn injuries while being transported to hospital. A fire tender was dispatched after local authorities received information, but by the time firefighting teams reached the scene, the vehicle had been entirely consumed by the blaze.

Who were the deceased

The four victims have been identified as Ramsingh Chaudhary, former Sarpanch and District Council member; his mother Pusi Devi, also a former Sarpanch; his wife; and his niece Mahima. Ramsingh Chaudhary was a local Congress leader, making the incident politically significant at the district level.

Investigation under way, foul play not ruled out

Senior police officials, including Ajmer Superintendent of Police Harshavardhan Agarwala, reached the site and are supervising the inquiry. Deputy Superintendent Ayush Vashishth, Borada SHO Suryabhan Singh, and Arai SHO Roshan Samaria were involved in rescue and investigation operations. A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team has collected samples and evidence from the scene.

SP Agarwala stated that while investigators are examining the possibility of a short circuit, the police are probing the matter from all angles — including treating it as a possible case of murder until the exact cause of the fire is established. No cause has been confirmed as of now.

Forensic analysis of the samples collected from the site is expected to provide clarity on whether the fire was accidental or otherwise. The investigation remains open, and authorities have not ruled out any angle. The deaths of a local Congress leader and three family members in such circumstances are likely to draw political attention at the state level in the days ahead.
