Patna, April 8 (NationPress) Four members of a family tragically lost their lives when their SUV plunged into a pond in Bihar’s Gaya district, according to officials on Tuesday.

The incident took place near the Dakhingaon Bridge in the area governed by the Wazirganj police station around midnight.

The victims have been identified as Shashikant Sharma (43), a prominent farmer from Sahawajpur village, his spouse Rinki Devi (40), and their two children: Sumit Anand (17) and Balkrishna (5).

The SHO of Wazirganj police station confirmed the tragic event, noting that the family was returning from a Shraddha Karma ceremony held in Bihar Sharif when the accident occurred.

While traveling in a Scorpio SUV, the driver lost control while navigating the narrow bridge near Dakhingaon.

The vehicle veered off the road and plunged into a nearby pond. The driver, Sintu, managed to escape and called for help.

Upon hearing his cries, a hotel operator in the vicinity alerted local villagers and contacted the police. Shortly thereafter, police and villagers arrived, and with the assistance of a JCB machine, they retrieved the SUV from the pond.

Unfortunately, by the time the vehicle was recovered, all four individuals had perished.

The news of this incident has left the village of Sahawajpur in deep shock, where Shashikant Sharma was a well-respected figure.

His eldest son, Sumit Anand, was also actively involved in BJP youth politics.

Villagers expressed profound sorrow, stating, “When no one is left in the family, what is the point of a post-mortem?” The village atmosphere is heavy with grief, particularly after reports indicated that Shashikant’s elderly mother fainted upon hearing the news and is currently in critical condition.

Administrative officials have since visited the accident site and promised a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Initial findings imply that the driver may have lost control due to poor visibility or the narrowness of the bridge.

This incident underscores the pressing need for enhanced road safety measures in rural areas of Bihar, especially on bridges and poorly lit roads.
