Bhopal, April 10 (NationPress) Four individuals tragically lost their lives on Thursday when the vehicle they were in plummeted off a bridge spanning a river in the Chargawan police station jurisdiction of Jabalpur.
Reports suggest that the driver of the speeding vehicle suddenly lost control, resulting in a collision with the bridge's guardrail before it fell into the river.
“The incident took place between 3:30 and 3:45 p.m. Local villagers heard a loud crash and promptly alerted the police. A team arrived at the scene, but sadly, four occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. Two others were rushed to Jabalpur Medical College Hospital. Their condition is critical, but they are conscious,” stated Abhishek Pyasi, in-charge of Chargawan police station in a conversation with IANS.
Interestingly, the vehicle's occupants were also transporting a male goat.
“At first glance, it seems they were returning from performing a symbolic offering of the goat to a local deity as part of a ritual, as all passengers belonged to the same community. Remarkably, the goat survived the accident,” the officer noted.
He further mentioned that the injured passengers were unable to provide statements at that moment. The police are currently awaiting post-mortem results and survivor accounts for a clearer picture of the incident.
The Chargawan Police Station team quickly arrived at the scene, given its location was only 5-7 km from the station.
In collaboration with local residents, they worked diligently to rescue the injured individuals trapped in the wreckage.
Using crowbars, they successfully pried open the vehicle's frame and rescued the two injured individuals.
The deceased, all from Chowkital village, were identified as Kishan Patel (35), Mahendra Patel (35), Sagar Patel (17), and Rajendra Patel (35).
The critically injured survivors were identified as Manoj Pratap (35) and Jitendra Patel Lodhi (36), also from Chowkital.
“The families of the deceased have been informed, and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem,” Pyasi confirmed.
The bridge where the tragedy occurred is situated approximately 45 km from Jabalpur.
